Silence of the Lambs - Is Buffalo Bill a failed trans character?
Okay, so I know technically Silence of the Lambs isn't sci-fi, but hear me out! World-building is about creating systems, right? And the criminal mind, especially a twisted one like Buffalo Bill's, is a SYSTEM of warped beliefs and desires. I think that makes it relevant, lol. Anyway, I recently re-watched it, and I’m stuck on something: Buffalo Bill's motivations always felt a little… muddy to me. He wants to make a woman-suit, which seems like he wants to be a woman, but then Lecter calls him out as not really being trans, just wanting to be a woman to satisfy a twisted need. But couldn't that twisted need be gender dysphoria? I'm not saying the movie handles it well (clearly, it doesn't!). But I'm wondering what everyone else's take is on this. Is it just a gross misunderstanding of transgender identity used to make a character extra creepy, or is there something more complex going on that's buried in the subtext? Like, maybe the movie unintentionally touched on a very real struggle, but then completely botched the execution? I'd love to hear other perspectives, especially from anyone who is a trans person. Were you offended by the portrayal? Did you read anything else into it maybe? I feel like this is one of those things we need to continually re-evaluate, and the way it will be perceived can change with time. Let’s discuss!
