Okay, Hear Me Out: "The Addams Family" is Secretly a Rom-Com (With a Twist)

Okay, so I know it's October and everyone's all about horror, but I just rewatched "The Addams Family" (the 90s one, obvs) and I have a theory. It's kinda a rom-com. Stay with me! Like, yes, it's got the whole spooky, kooky vibe, and Christina Ricci as Wednesday is ICONIC (that deadpan delivery? Chef's kiss). But underneath all the torture devices and Lurch's grunts, there's a love story… or, several, actually. Firstly, Gomez and Morticia? Ultimate relationship goals. Seriously. The way they look at each other, the passion, the… uh… slightly dangerous games? They're completely devoted. It's way healthier than most rom-com couples, tbh. And then you have the whole imposter Fester plot. The whole time Tully (the lawyer) is trying to swindle the Addams, the film is pushing the idea that the ONLY thing that matters to the family is their love. He eventually comes to love the family for real and protects them? Talk about a found family trope! And what about Pugsley and Wednesday? Their relationship is one of morbid sibling love. It's cute. It's horrifying. It's PERFECT! I mean, their bickering might involve electric chairs and dynamite, but they always have each other's backs. Kinda like a really, REALLY dark rom-com. The ending even has a happy ending for all! The real Fester comes, Tully stays with the family, and Gomez and Morticia re-declare their love. A classic rom-com structure! Maybe I'm reaching, but I think there's something to it. It's definitely a subversion of the genre, but it has all the key elements: love, connection, and a (slightly twisted) happy ending. What do you guys think? Am I completely off my rocker, or is "The Addams Family" lowkey the most romantic movie ever? Also, can we all agree Raul Julia was a gift to humanity?
