Point Break: Undercover Bromance or Accidental Rom-Com?
Okay, settle in, folks, because I just rewatched Point Break (Keanu Reeves surfing? YES, PLEASE) and I have a theory. It's a cop thriller, right? Bank robbers in presidential masks, super intense skydiving, yada yada. But hear me out: Is it secretly a romance? Specifically, a VERY intense bromance that could have veered into rom-com territory with, like, one tiny tweak in the script? Think about it: Johnny Utah is OBSESSED with Bodhi. He's willing to throw away his career, his morals, EVERYTHING to stay connected to this dude. He's like, 'I am an F-B-I agent!' then, two seconds later, 'Bro, I wanna surf with you and rob banks!' It's basically that scene in every rom-com where the girl chooses the bad boy over the nice, stable guy, except the bad boy is a Zen master bank robber. The beach bonfire scene? Straight outta The Bachelor! All that meaningful gazing into the flames... so much yearning! And Bodhi! He totally could have been written as the cool, emotionally unavailable love interest. The whole 'you gotta let go, fear limits you' thing? That's rom-com banter gold! And the ending! Where Utah just, like, lets Bodhi go ride that wave into oblivion? Talk about a grand, romantic gesture! It's like the Notebook ending but with more saltwater and less Ryan Gosling (sorry, Keanu, but Gosling has the rom-com thing LOCKED down). I'm not saying Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves should have kissed on screen. But I am saying that if you squint really hard, Point Break is basically a really long, really intense meet-cute with a tragic ending. Thoughts? Am I totally off my rocker, or do you see it too?
