Point Break: Beyond the Absurdity, There's a Vibe
Okay, so I just rewatched Point Break (1991) and, wow, it's... something. I mean, the basic premise is so ridiculously 90s action movie – undercover cop goes surfing to catch bank robbers who wear ex-presidents masks? Honestly, it's incredible. I haven't been able to find out who directed it even. But, like so many of those movies, it's the VIBE that really gets you. Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah is...Keanu. He's trying his best, bless him. Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, though? Total charisma overload. You almost understand why Johnny gets sucked into Bodhi's whole philosophical surfer-criminal cult thing. The skydiving scenes, even if they're probably a bit cheesy now, are still really visually striking. And the surfing! I can't surf to save my life, but it makes me kind of wish I could... maybe. What really sticks with me is the ending. The rain, the beach, Johnny letting Bodhi go... it's surprisingly poignant considering the rest of the movie is basically a high-octane fever dream. And the reveal that Bodhi was always chasing that ultimate wave. It adds something complex, right? Maybe a little heavy-handed, sure. But I just love the idea that you can have a movie with such a simplistic story that does something memorable with it. I wouldn't say it's a cinematic masterpiece, but it's definitely a fun watch, and it's got that 90s action magic that's hard to resist. Anyone else have thoughts on Point Break? Am I completely alone in thinking it's secretly brilliant, haha?
