Thelma & Louise: More Than Just An Epic Road Trip (Hear Me Out!)
Okay, so I know technically Thelma & Louise isn't a rom-com (duh, Lauren!), but hear me out! I have this theory that it's actually a SUPER subversive, super dark rom-com about Thelma and Louise falling in love with each other. I mean, think about it. They start off both pretty miserable in their relationships - Thelma with her controlling husband Darryl and Louise with her… well, consistently absent Jimmy. Then, BAM! Crisis hits, and suddenly they're completely dependent on each other, making decisions together, and growing as individuals because of their bond. You can SEE the shift, especially in Thelma. By the time she's robbing that convenience store, she's practically a new woman! And Louise? She's finally free. It's not explicitly romantic, I get that. But look at the way they look at each other! The hand-holding, the shared experiences, the utter devotion they have. Remember the scene when they're driving after the whole 'incident' and Louise says something like 'Something's crossed over in me and I can't go back?' It's like, she's not just talking about the law or Darryl, she's talking about her whole life. And Thelma is right there with her, offering her unwavering support. Think about the final scene too - why would they choose each other over turning back? Because they're bound together. Okay, maybe I'm projecting (I do that a lot, lol), but I honestly think there's a legit case to be made that their deep friendship blossoms into something more, something they never consciously acknowledge because, society, yada yada. Instead it manifests as this fierce, protective love for each other and wanting to protect that love. And maybe the whole 'driving off a cliff' ending is just their way of ensuring they can always be together. You know, like a super, super dramatic grand gesture of love! Anyway, just a thought. What do you guys think? Am I totally off base here, or is there a little forbidden sapphic subtext going on that everyone's been missing? Hit me with your best arguments – I'm ready to debate!
