Yo, 'Cape Fear' (Scorsese's, obvi) Still Holds Up!
Okay, so I just rewatched Scorsese's 'Cape Fear' (1991) and WOW. Still packs a punch. Like, I know it's a remake, but come on, Scorsese and De Niro? Gold, pure gold. De Niro as Max Cady is just terrifying. The way he can switch from quoting the Bible to being a total psycho is unsettling af. That scene where he's pumping iron in the theater, man, I swear my heart skipped a beat. I gotta admit though, Jessica Lange and Nick Nolte are kinda...meh. They're fine, but they feel like they're just reacting to De Niro's intensity, not really bringing a whole lot themselves, ya know? And Juliette Lewis? She's great, especially in that awkward, messed up scene with Cady. Definitely some uncomfortable stuff there, but she plays the teenage angst and vulnerability really well. It's like, you kinda feel bad for her, even though she's making questionable choices. I do think that the ending got a little too over-the-top, especially with the whole storm/houseboat situation. It was intense, sure, but felt a little…forced? Like Scorsese was trying too hard to make it epic. Still, the tension throughout the whole movie is insane, and De Niro's performance alone is worth the watch. Maybe not perfect, but def a solid thriller that'll get under your skin. Anyone else seen it recently? What did you guys think? Maybe I'm too easy on 90's thrillers haha!
