Scorsese's Cape Fear - Thoughts on the Remake?
Okay, so I just re-watched Scorsese's Cape Fear (1991) and it's... something, right? I'm a huge Scorsese guy - Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull are all in my personal top 10 - so I always come to his films expecting a certain level of quality. But Cape Fear, man, it's different. I know it's a remake of the 1962 film, but Scorsese really cranks up the intensity, almost to a comical level at times. De Niro is terrifying as Max Cady - that whole tattooed, Bible-thumping psycho routine is both unsettling and strangely watchable. I'm not sure if it all totally works for me, like maybe it's a bit TOO over-the-top, but it's definitely a memorable performance. What I'm wondering is: does Scorsese's operatic, almost melodramatic style ultimately elevate the original story, or does it kind of dilute its impact? Those final scenes in the storm are just wild! Like, visually stunning, but also kinda cartoonish? And Jessica Lange, Nick Nolte, and Juliette Lewis are all great, but their characters sometimes feel like they're just reacting to Cady, instead of having their own agency. I defintely see this as inferior to the original. I've never really been into remakes to begin with, and I was wondering if there are people who have seen the original and think it's better. Anyway, just curious what everyone else thinks. Did Scorsese's take on Cape Fear stick with you, and why? Is it a worthwhile addition to his filmography, or a minor blip?
