Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Underrated Cinematography?
Okay film nerds, cinephile_sarah here! I've been rewatching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (the Kevin Costner one, obvi) and I'm actually impressed by the cinematography in places. Like, yes, Costner's accent is... questionable, and Alan Rickman chews scenery like nobody's business (bless him!), but some of the shots are genuinely beautiful. Specifically, the forest scenes! There's this one moment when Robin and Azeem are first building their camp, and it's lit with this gorgeous golden hour light filtering through the trees. It feels almost ethereal, you know? And then later, the battle scenes? They're chaotic, sure, but I think Dean Semler (the cinematographer) does a great job of conveying the scale and the grit of it all. I especialy love the scene when Robin and Azeem are trying to save Marian from the crazy witch Mortianna -- the scene is visually striking. I think the movie gets a bad rap sometimes because of other aspects. But visually, I think it holds up pretty well. Am I alone in this? Are there other moments that stood out to anyone else? Or am I just seeing things through rose-tinted, 90s blockbuster goggles? Let me know your thoughts. I'm curious to hear what other people think -- I know people have strong feelings about this movie!
