Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Azeem, the unsung hero (and world-building potential!)

Okay, sci-fi guy talking about Robin Hood... I know, I know! But hear me out. I watched "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" again the other night, and while it's cheesy in spots (Alan Rickman's Sheriff is GODLY though, right?), I kept getting hooked on Azeem. Like, he's such a cool freaking character, and they barely scratch the surface of his backstory. Think about it: We get hints about his engineering skills, his medical knowledge – all stemming from his Moorish culture. They establish this whole rich background in just a few scenes, but then it's mostly used as a convenient plot device. I was REALLY wishing they'd explored more of Azeem's world. Imagine if they'd shown a flashback to his life pre-Jerusalem, or even just expanded upon the cultures he'd encountered. SO MUCH world-building potential LOST! Does anyone else feel like Azeem was severely underutilized? I'm not saying make him the star, but give him a proper arc connected to his roots. Maybe even a sequel focused on him returning home? IDK, just feels like there was a missed opportunity to create something truly unique within the Robin Hood mythos. What are your thoughts? Am I just overthinking it because I'm perpetually obsessed with fleshing out fictional universes? Also, random thought: anyone else think Costner's American accent was... distracting? Like, couldn't he have even tried to sound British? It's a nitpick, but it took me out of the movie sometimes!
