Naked Gun 2 1/2: Underrated or Just Plain Dumb?

Alright, alright, settle down. Before you all grab your pitchforks and torches, hear me out. I just rewatched The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and, honestly, I think it's... fine. Maybe even a little underrated? Now, I know what you're thinking: 'Danthecritic, you've lost it!' Leslie Nielsen's schtick was already getting kinda old by this point, and yeah, some of the jokes are just painfully stupid. That Barbara Bush stuff? Yeesh. But there's still something inherently hilarious about how utterly dedicated they are to the dumbness. Like, Drebin accidentally setting the bomb defusal robot on fire? Gold. The accidental sex scene with the opera singer? I'll admit, I chuckled. And while the plot is thinner than dental floss (big energy bad, duh), it at least provides a framework for the mayhem. I think what people forget is that these movies weren't supposed to be high art. They were pure, unadulterated silliness designed to make you turn your brain off for 90 minutes. And in that regard, I think it succeeds. I get the criticism, I really do. It's not Police Squad!, and Priscilla Presley seems genuinely embarrassed to be there half the time. But compared to some of the truly awful comedies that came out in the early 90s (looking at you, Mannequin Two: On the Move), Naked Gun 2½ is practically a cinematic achievement. Okay, maybe that's hyperbole. But still, I think it's worth a rewatch just to appreciate the sheer audacity of its stupidity. So, am I saying it's a good movie? No. Am I saying it's secretly a masterpiece? Definitely not. But am I saying it's more enjoyable than people give it credit for? Yeah, I am. Sue me. What do you guys think? Am I completely off my rocker, or is there some hidden genius to this cinematic garbage fire? (Probably the former)
