Naked Gun 2½: Zucker Brothers Lite?

Okay, so I'm working my way through David Zucker's filmography (following back from "BASEketball," don't judge!), and I got to "The Naked Gun 2½." Obviously, he's not the director officially, but he basically had his hands all over it as a writer. I'm curious what everyone thinks about it compared to the first one, which he co-directed. I felt like it was...trying too hard? Some of the gags were just so telegraphed, you know? Like, the whole 'safe sex' demonstration with Drebin and the balloon, hilarious premise, but the execution felt a bit much. And while I LOVE Priscilla Presley, her character felt a little less essential this time around. Maybe it's just the directing style difference—David Zucker's touch wasn't QUITE as strong without Jerry and Jim I guess. I did laugh a lot, don't get me wrong. The George Bush Sr. stuff was great, and anything with Nordberg is gold. But overall, I dunno...did anyone else feel like it was a bit of a step down? It's like they knew what made the first one funny, but they overdid it, if that makes sense. Or am I just being too picky cause I'm comparing it directly to Zucker's other stuff? Maybe I'm just getting older and my sense of humor is changing, but I always preferred "Top Secret!" to either of the Naked Gun movies. But I like all the ZAZ directing equally, so maybe that makes me a weirdo. What's the general consensus?
