Is "Naked Gun 2 1/2" Secretly a Political Thriller?
Okay, hear me out, fellow fright fans! I know, I know, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear isn't exactly Silence of the Lambs. But I've been rewatching it lately (for the millionth time – gotta love Leslie Nielsen!), and I'm starting to think there's more to it than just slapstick and pratfalls. Like, isn't it kinda brilliant how they're satirizing big energy companies and their corrupt practices? They are literally trying to stop alternative fuels from being developed! That's messed up! Think about it: The bad guys are these powerful industrialists trying to shut down Dr. Meinheimer's solar energy initiative. They are using every trick in the book to do it. Frank Drebin's trying to stop them, but he's so incompetent he only succeeds by accident! The whole thing feels like a really, REALLY over-the-top version of an actual political thriller, just with more sight gags and less actual suspense. I think I have found my new favorite comedy! Maybe I am looking too much to the story, though. And that dinner scene where Drebin's trying to seduce Lana? It might just be played for laughs, but it's also highlighting the way powerful men try to manipulate women (even if Drebin's manipulation is hilariously inept.) It's like... underneath all the banana peels and exploding condoms, there's this underlying commentary on corporate greed and political corruption. Or maybe I've just had too much caffeine. What do you guys think? Am I onto something, or am I just reaching here? Also, can we all just agree that Priscilla Presley was amazing in this movie? I swear, she and Leslie Nielsen had the best comedic timing ever. It might be better than the first film, and that's saying something!
