Hot Shots! - ZAZ Does Top Gun (and More!)
So, I'm on a bit of a ZAZ (Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker) kick lately, diving into their filmography because, let's be honest, who doesn't love a good Zucker movie? I just watched Hot Shots! (1991) again, and man, it still cracks me up. It's wild how much they cram into these things. Obviously, the main target is Top Gun, but it feels like they're simultaneously poking fun at every other action movie of the 80s and early 90s. Topper Harley is such a great, flawed character. Charlie Sheen really understood the assignment. That volleyball scene, good lord, I don't know that I've ever laughed so hard. The exaggerated slow motion, the Kenny Loggins parody... gold. And the gags with the Iraqi fighter pilot? Maybe a little less PC now, but still brutally funny in that ZAZ way. I also really loved the callbacks to their earlier films, like Airplane! It's clear they were masters of self-referential humor. It's not high art or anything, but Hot Shots! is just pure, unadulterated comedic joy. It's one of those movies I can throw on anytime and be guaranteed a few belly laughs. It's interesting that Jim Abrahams directed it, and not all three. Did they kinda split up duties a bit at this stage? I need to look into that. Overall, if you're a fan of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker style of comedy, and somehow haven't seen this, do yourself a favor and check it out. It's a great example of their work, even if it's not quite as iconic as Airplane! or The Naked Gun, for me personally. What are your favorite gags from this? I'm always keen to hear what others pick up on!
