Okay, "My Girl" and THAT Soundtrack...

So, let's talk "My Girl" for a sec. I know, I know, it's not exactly a score heavy flick, but hear me out! When you think of that movie, you instantly think of the needle drops, right? The Temptations, even freakin' Slim Whitman. It's like a time capsule of early 90s nostalgia, done really well. It's like, all the music perfectly underscores the bittersweet vibe of the whole thing. I gotta admit i get a little choked up by the end. Not gonna lie. But the small cues that do exist, even if they aren't a full-blown score, are just...effective. There's a simple innocence to them, mirroring Vada's perspective. It’s not a John Williams level of orchestration, obviously, but it does what it needs to do, and it's usually in service of highlighting the emotion. Plus, it is so entwined with those massive needle drops that the whole thing is one cohesive emotional experience. Anyone know who handled those minimal cues? I have never been able to find out... And speaking of emotional, even though it's a kids' movie, it really tackles some heavy stuff. Death, obviously, but also first love, growing up, dealing with grief. The scene where Vada realizes what happened to Thomas J...man, even now! sobs histrionically It's a gut punch. I kind of wish there was a propper score in there now that I think about it, because I feel something more substantial could have pushed that emotional impact even further! Alright, alright, I'm done being a sap. Anyone else have strong feelings about the music in "My Girl"? Or just the movie in general? Let me know what you think!
