Boyz n the Hood: More Than Just a "Hood Movie"?

Okay, so I just finished rewatching Boyz n the Hood for like, the millionth time. And yeah, it's a classic, whatever. But something hit me different this time. We always talk about it being this super important movie about gang violence and growing up in the hood, right? Which it IS. But I'm wondering if there's a whole other level to it that people kinda gloss over. Like, is it REALLY just about the hood, or is it about...fatherhood? Think about it. Furious Styles is like, the CENTER of that movie, man. He's constantly dropping knowledge on Tre, trying to steer him right. And he's not just preaching, he's SHOWING – the whole scene with the real estate thing, explaining gentrification? Gold. Then contrast that with Doughboy... who basically had NO father figure. Or Ricky, who seems to have a mom who loves him, but ain't equipped to really guide him through all that BS. It's almost like Singleton is saying that the absence of good father figures is a bigger factor than we even realize. And then there's the scene where Furious is talking about all the black owned businesses. Is this a movie about gang violence, or is it an allegory for the black community taking control of their own destiny? It's honestly really hard to tell at times because the plot is so good at intertwining everything together. Maybe I'm reaching, I don't know. It's 3 AM and I'm hopped up on Cherry Coke, but I think it's more than just a gritty drama. It's about the choices, the influences, and ultimately, about what it takes to break the cycle. And Furious, to me, is the key to understanding all of it. What do you guys think? Am I onto something or just being overly analytical after too much late-night cinema?
