"The Last Boy Scout" - Underrated Action Gem? Effects & Sound Breakdown
Okay, so I just rewatched "The Last Boy Scout" for probably the millionth time. Bruce Willis is just peak Willis in this, right? Super cynical and world-weary. But I wanted to talk specifically about the action sequences and how well they hold up. For a 90s action flick, the practical effects are awesome. I mean, the explosions feel huge. Anyone else notice the almost cartoonish impact sounds they use? Like, when Joe Hallenbeck punches someone (or just about anything explodes), it's this super-exaggerated THWACK. It's almost comically violent, but it works! And speaking of sound, the gunshots are incredibly punchy. They definitely went for that hyper-realistic (but still stylized) sound design. I'm curious if anyone knows what kind of microphones they might have used back then to capture those sounds. Also, the football stadium shootout is just epic. The mix of the crowd noise, the gunshots, and Michael Kamen's score elevates that scene. Are there any particular scenes or sound cues that stood out to you guys? I know a lot of people skip over this one when talking about Bruce Willis's best, but I think it's a genuinely great action movie with some seriously impressive (for its time) special effects and sound design. What are your thoughts? Am I just blinded by 90s nostalgia, or does this movie still pack a punch today?
