Barton Fink: What IS It With Those Sweaty Shirts?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching Barton Fink and WOW. The whole movie was just... unsettling, right? But putting the weirdness aside for a sec, I couldn't stop focusing on Barton's wardrobe (or lack thereof – LOL). Seriously, that sweaty undershirt situation was intense. I know it's supposed to show his discomfort and creative block, but I'm wondering if there's more to it than just "he's stressed." Was it, like, a specific style of undershirt that was common then, or was it chosen specifically to be extra unflattering? It almost felt like another layer of the character, y'know? And then there's Charlie Meadows, aka Karl Mundt. His suits, in comparison, are so clean and pressed. He's always so put-together, even when things are totally falling apart. It's such a stark contrast to Barton's increasingly grimy appearance. I'm wondering if the costume designer purposely did this to highlight the divide between the two characters, or if it's simply a visual representation of their internal states. Also, minor detail, but did anyone else find Audrey Taylor's outfits kind of blah? I mean, they're period-appropriate and all, but they felt really muted compared to everything else that was happening on screen. Was that intentional? Maybe to show she was kind of fading into the background of the Hollywood scene? Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there and see what you all thought. What details did you pick up on? And am I just overthinking the sweaty shirt thing? Haha!
