Father of the Bride - Still Holds Up After All These Years!

Okay, folks, so my daughter was having a sleepover and they wanted to watch a "rom-com classic." Of course, they landed on Father of the Bride (the Steve Martin one!). Now, I hadn't seen it in ages, like, since Annie (my actual daughter, not the movie one!) was a toddler. I gotta say, it really does still hold up! Steve Martin is just brilliant as George Banks, the dad completely losing it over his little girl getting married. I think every parent can relate to that feeling of your kids growing up way too fast. And Diane Keaton? She's amazing too -- I especially loved her calmness compared to George's freak outs. The scene at the grocery store when he's buying the hot dog buns (or not!), and the basketball scene with Kieran Culkin, I was laughing so hard. I always forget how funny that movie is. Also, I can't not mention Martin Short, who is hilarious. His accent is kind of ridiculous, but whatever. He's so over the top and I can't get enough. It's definitely a product of the early 90s, which is kinda fun. Annie's wedding dress? Big puffy sleeves galore! But honestly, the core of the movie – family, love, and letting go – is timeless. There's some outdated stuff for sure, like the casual jokes about Bryan being wealthy, but it ultimately balances out. I was actually surprised at how much it resonated with me now that I'm the parent of a young adult. I found myself tearing up at the end when George realizes he'll always be Annie's father, even though she's starting her own family. So, yeah, my daughter and her friends loved it, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. If you're looking for a feel-good movie night with the family (maybe skip some of the wedding budget talk with younger kids!), Father of the Bride is a solid choice. It's a lighthearted reminder that even though things change, the love and bond between a parent and child never really goes away. Definitely recommend! (Although, warning - you might start crying... just saying).
