Fried Green Tomatoes: Overrated Southern Comfort Food?

Okay, I just watched "Fried Green Tomatoes" for the first time, and I'm gonna be honest, I don't get the hype. Everyone I know acts like it's this amazing, life-changing movie. I found it...fine. A little too saccharine for my taste, honestly. All that Southern charm felt kinda forced, like they were trying too hard to sell me something. Kathy Bates was good, I'll give them that, but her character's transformation felt totally unbelievable. Suddenly, she's assertive because of a story and some fried green somethings? Nah. Doesn't ring true. And don't even get me started on the Idgie/Ruth relationship. It was heavily implied, but never actually said. I'm all for subtext, but this felt like they chickened out. Either commit or don't, you know? All that coy "best friends" nonsense just felt...weak. And the whole Klan/revenge subplot? Total melodrama. Like, come on. Was that even necessary? I guess what I'm asking is, am I missing something? Or is this whole movie just nostalgia-bait for people who wish they lived in a simpler, whitewashed version of the South? Because honestly, I'm just not buying what they're selling. Maybe someone can explain why everyone seems to love this thing so much. Maybe then I'll understand the hype. Seriously, why did everyone like this thing so much?!
