Return to the Blue Lagoon: Underrated or Just...There?

Okay, so I just re-watched "Return to the Blue Lagoon" (yeah, the sequel) and I'm honestly conflicted. The original, with a young Brooke Shields, had a certain raw appeal, even if it was a bit slow. THIS one... well, it's definitely...something. I mean, Milla Jovovich is gorgeous, obviously, and the scenery is STUNNING. But the plot, or lack thereof, is kinda painful. It's just...they grow up, they're hot, stuff happens. Very little actual conflict. I'm not saying I hated it. Honestly, there's a hypnotic quality to watching almost nothing happen on a beautiful island for an hour and a half. And I gotta give props to the cinematography – some of those underwater shots are legit breathtaking. But as an editor, I'm just screaming internally for someone to inject SOME tension! Even a slightly more menacing wild animal or a genuinely scary storm would've been welcome. What I did appreciate (and this is a weird compliment, I admit) is how simple they kept things. Like, the characters' motivations and interactions are so straightforward, it's almost refreshing in an era of hyper-complex storytelling. It felt like I was watching a long shampoo commercial that was also a PSA about the pitfalls of premarital cohabitation. So yeah, not a great movie, but somehow also not a terrible movie. It's the cinematic equivalent of comfort food – vaguely satisfying, but ultimately forgettable. Anyone else have thoughts? Did I miss something profound amidst all the loincloths and glistening skin?
