Okay, "Return to the Blue Lagoon" – Wardrobe Malfunction or Deliberate Choice?
So, I finally got around to watching "Return to the Blue Lagoon." Listen, I know, I know, it's no cinematic triumph, but as someone who's obsessed with costume design (or, you know, lack thereof in this case), I had thoughts. Big thoughts. We're supposed to believe these two kids grow up totally isolated on a tropical island, right? Fine. But does that mean they IMMEDIATELY know how to fashion perfectly flattering, strategically placed seashell bras and loincloths that look like they were ripped from a Versace runway? Like, immediately? I'm calling BS. My theory? It's not just about "showing skin" (though let's be real, it definitely is a factor). I think the costuming (or lack thereof) is a deliberate attempt to subtly sexualize their relationship without explicitly showing anything that would make studio execs freak out. The camera lingers on Milla Jovovich's (Lilli) developing figure, and Brian Krause's (Richard)…everything. It's all very calculated. And honestly, kind of creepy if you think too hard about it. Especially cause they are, technically, supposed to be minors for a good chunk of the movie. I mean, wouldn't it have been more believable (and honestly, more interesting dramatically) if they were wearing rags pieced together from whatever washed ashore? I'm picturing Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now but, like, way more strategically placed coconuts. It might have added a layer of survival struggle, instead of just making it look like a really long shampoo commercial. I also kind of think they made it a bit too polished; the original at least had moments where the "roughing it" felt real. Anyway, just some late night thoughts after indulging in some truly questionable cinematic choices. What do you guys think? Was it just a blatant attempt at titillation (pun intended, sorry), or am I giving the costume department too much credit for "subtlety"? Also, can we talk about the fact that Lilli's hair is PERFECT the entire film? Like, ocean water doesn't mess with it AT ALL? I'm calling foul, you guys. Foul!
