TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze - Still holds up?
Okay, cinephiles! I'm doing a deep dive into sequel cinematography for my film class, and of course, I had to revisit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. I know, I know, it's not exactly Citizen Kane, but as a kid, this movie was EVERYTHING. Now, watching as a (somewhat) informed film student, I'm noticing things I didn't before. Specifically, did anyone else think the fight choreography got...weirder? Like, the first movie had a grit to it, even with the rubber suits. Here, it feels almost cartoonish (ironic, I know). Thinking about how they actually shot those scenes, given the limitations of the costumes and practical effects, I'm curious about the director's choices. Was it a conscious decision to lean into the silliness after the darker tone of the original, or was it more about trying to mask the technical challenges of the fight scenes. And the whole Super Shredder transformation sequence... I mean, it's iconic, but from a cinematography perspective, it feels kinda rushed? They built up the ooze, the fear, and then BAM, giant shredder dude. Felt like they could've milked that tension a little more. What did you guys think? Was it perfect camp, or a missed opportunity for something truly terrifying, cinematically speaking?
