Cowabunga...of cheesiness! TMNT II gets a re-listen.
Alright dudes and dudettes, HughesReviews back at it again. Had a craving for some nostalgia and threw on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze last night. And of course, I was paying EXTRA attention to the score. I gotta say, it's... well, it's exactly what you expect. Big, bombastic, and kinda goofy. John Du Prez replaced John Debney from the first film, and his score definitely leans way more into the kid-friendly tone. There are some genuinely fun moments, like the music during the fight scene at the construction site. It has that playful, chaotic energy that fits the Turtles perfectly. But honestly, a lot of it just feels… repetitive. Like the same themes get recycled a lot. I do appreciate the attempts to incorporate some oriental sounds to tie in with the ninja aspect, but it's not always successful. It can feel a bit… forced. And let's be real, Vanilla Ice's "Ninja Rap" is a moment in film history, for better or worse. It's so incredibly 90s, it almost hurts. Musically, it's... yeah, no comment. Pure guilty pleasure, no shame. I think the best comparison I can make is that the score matches the film itself. It's a fun, silly ride, but not exactly high art. Are there worse scores out there? Absolutely. Is it something I'd listen to on its own? Probably not. Still, gotta love the Turtles! Cowabunga! Anyone else got strong feelings about the TMNT II score, or the film in general? Let's hear 'em!
