Only Yesterday and the Power of Nostalgia (Plus, the Music!)

Okay, so I recently watched Only Yesterday (1991) and was absolutely floored. For those who don't know, it's this Ghibli film about a woman, Taeko, reflecting on her childhood while she's traveling to the countryside. What really struck me was how perfectly they captured that feeling of looking back and cringing, but also cherishing those awkward, formative moments. Like, the scene where she's trying to figure out fractions in elementary school and just totally bombs? I felt that in my soul, lol. It's a deceptively simple movie, but it really gets under your skin. But you guys KNOW I'm here for the soundtrack! I'm gonna be honest, it's not a traditional Joe Hisaishi score. It's much more grounded in folk music, with lots of Eastern European influences – specifically, the use of Bulgarian vocals is just breathtaking and totally unexpected! I think it fits so well with the themes of introspection and connecting with more 'natural' feelings. The song 'The Rose' even made its presence, with a translated lyrics, adding to the nostalgic feels. It's one of those scores that you don't necessarily notice while watching, but it subtly enhances every scene. It’s kind of a slow burn, but that really paid off for me. I think what really resonated with me is how relatable Taeko's journey is when she's rediscovering who she is. I have a hard time thinking about my past, but the movie really pushed me in a positive way. I'm not sure if it's a film everyone will love, and its pacing is a little slow, but if you're in the mood for something thoughtful and emotionally resonant, AND willing to accept something different from Studio Ghibli, give it a try. Anyone else seen it? What did you think of the soundtrack in particular? Did the childhood flashbacks hit you as hard as they hit me?
