Sleeping with the Enemy: Julia Roberts' Great '90s Escape (and Closet!)
Okay, so I just rewatched Sleeping with the Enemy, and while the plot is… intense (Kevin Anderson totally nailed creepy, right?!), all I could think about was Laura's style transformation! I mean, she goes from these super prim, controlled outfits in the Cape Cod scenes – very buttoned-up cardigans and sensible shoes – to a much more relaxed, almost bohemian vibe once she gets to Iowa. Remember that oversized knit sweater she wears when she's painting the house? And the flowy dresses? HUGE upgrade. It really visually emphasized her newfound freedom, even if she wasn't truly free, you know? I also loved how the costuming subtly reflected her husband Martin's obsession with order and control. Everything in their first house was so perfectly coordinated, almost sterile. Even Laura's clothes felt like they were chosen for her, not by her. That scene where he lines up the soup cans? Chilling! But also, a great detail to show his character. And then… the reveal at the end! Ugh, the gloves. I got actual chills. The movie itself is a bit dated now, and some of the plot points are kinda flimsy if you think too hard, but as a study in how clothing can reflect character and emotional state? Definitely worth a watch. Plus, Julia Roberts looks amazing, obvs. Anyone else notice the costume choices? What were your favorite looks? Okay, I just had to edit this because I forgot to mention The Dress! Laura literally puts on this gorgeous, red dress that's basically the embodiment of her repressed desires RIGHT before she stages her death. It's like, her final act of rebellion? And we never see her wear it again. It's such a small detail, but it speaks volumes. Okay, rant over! Haha.
