Mediterraneo: Unexpectedly Sweet and a Little Bit Bawdy (for a war movie!)

Okay, so I stumbled across this movie, 'Mediterraneo', the other night, and it was... interesting. It's about these Italian soldiers during WWII who basically get abandoned on a tiny Greek island. They're supposed to be lookouts, but the island is so peaceful and the villagers are so welcoming that they kinda, well, forget about the war. It's not exactly the kind of war movie you expect, you know? More about finding humanity than, um, blowing stuff up (thank goodness!). There's this one scene where they start fixing up the old church and putting on plays with the villagers – so cute! But then you have the whole thing with Lieutenant Montini and the local woman, Vassilissa... let's just say my eyebrows were raised! It's definitely not 'Little House on the Prairie' levels of family-friendly, gotta be honest. I think it's probably best for older kids and teens. It sparked a good conversation with my 16-year-old about the complexities of war and how people adapt. Honestly, the ending kinda got to me. It's bittersweet, but in a way that feels real. They built a life there, you know? Finding a little peace in the middle of all that chaos. The director, I think they nailed the feeling of the place. Anyone else seen this? What did you think? Did the whole, ahem, Montini romance make anyone else feel a little squicky, or was it just me? I'm curious to hear other's opinions! Oh, and quick note: I think the director isn't actually 'Unknown', I'm just, you know, drawing a blank right now! Anyone know the name? I'm gonna look it up. But still wanted to share first!
