The Rocketeer: Underrated Gem or Just Nostalgia?

Okay, parents, let's talk about The Rocketeer! I rewatched this with the kids last night (ages 7 and 9), and I was curious what you guys thought. I remember LOVING it as a kid. Like, who didn't want a jetpack after seeing that movie?! But rewatching it now, I'm wondering if my fondness is mostly just nostalgia clouding my judgement. It's a fun adventure flick for sure, and the retro vibe is super cool. But the plot is a little…thin, right? Is it just me? My kids were definitely into it, especially the flying scenes. Jenny (the 7-year-old) was completely mesmerized. And honestly, Timothy Dalton as Neville Sinclair is fantastic – such a great villain! But I couldn't help cringing a little at some of the blatant WWII era stereotypes. Like, it's a kids' movie, I get it, but still... Has anyone else had that thought? Did it make you think twice about showing it to your kids? Also, that scene where Cliff saves his girlfriend, Jenny, at the airfield? Really high stakes! Is it a little too intense for younger viewers? I'm always trying to gauge what's appropriate, and I felt like that scene was pushing the envelope. I loved the character, but was the actor (Billy Campbell) quite right for the role? Did he seem a bit 'wooden' or am I being harsh? Anyway, I'd love to get your thoughts! Am I being overly critical, or is The Rocketeer a flawed but fun ride? Let me know your experiences!
