The Rocketeer: Was Lothar Actually...In On It?! 🤯
Okay, so I just rewatched The Rocketeer (again, lol), and a thought occurred to me that's been bugging me ever since. Hear me out: what if Lothar, the huge bodyguard dude, was actually a double agent for Howard Hughes the whole time? I know, I know, wild. BUT THINK ABOUT IT. He's always around Neville Sinclair. He's super loyal, ostensibly, but like...does he ever really succeed at anything? Sinclair basically spells out his evil plan to him constantly, and Lothar just kinda grunts and nods. Seems suss, right? Like, remember the scene at the Griffith Observatory? Lothar's supposed to be guarding the rocket, but he's easily distracted by the (admittedly cute) reporter. Seems kinda dumb for a supposedly top-notch bodyguard, doesn't it? Maybe that was intentional? Maybe he let her get close so she could warn Cliff or something. And then, in the big air battle, he's kinda just...there. He doesn't really DO anything except get blown off the roof (lol). If he was truly devoted to Sinclair, wouldn't he be trying harder to protect the rocket? I know this sounds like a crazy stretch, but maybe Hughes paid Lothar to subtly sabotage Sinclair's efforts and make sure the rocket ended up in the right hands? It could explain why Lothar's so ineffective and why Sinclair seems so willing to put up with his apparent ineptitude. Maybe the dude was playing the long game! I'd love to see someone else's thoughts. Is this totally off-base, or am I on to something here? This movie is like, my childhood! I just gotta know!
