Jim Jarmusch's "Night on Earth": A Cool Ride Through 5 Cities
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Night on Earth" (1991). I'm on a mission to run through all the Jarmusch films, and this one was definitely a vibe. I really love how he just captures these everyday slices of life, you know? It's nothing groundbreaking, just five taxi rides in different cities, but the characters are so... real. And the connections, or lack thereof, are pretty fascinating. My favorite segment was probably Winona Ryder as the chain-smoking Corky in L.A. She's SO good, and the dynamic with Gena Rowlands playing a Hollywood casting agent is pure gold. That whole scene where Corky just isn't interested in being in movies, even though she's clearly got something, is just fantastic. The Helsinki segment, with Matti Pellonpää's stoic driver telling increasingly depressing "true" stories, was a close second. It’s dark humor at its best, and the drunk passengers' reactions are priceless. The Rome bit with Roberto Benigni was a bit much for me, I have to admit. He's usually great, but that character was just dialed up to 11 the whole time. Kinda grating, honestly. New York and Paris segments were good, solid Jarmusch, but didn't quite reach the heights of L.A. or Helsinki. Overall, definitely worth checking out if you're into low-key, character-driven stories and quirky humor. It's not gonna blow your mind, but it's a cool ride... literally. Anyone else seen it? What were your favorite segments?
