Is "The Double Life of Veronique" Sci-Fi or am I just losing it?
Okay, so I just watched The Double Life of Véronique (1991), and while it's technically listed as drama/fantasy, I can't shake this feeling that there's something more going on. I'm Kevin, btw, and I get really invested in sci-fi world-building, so maybe my brain is just wired to find it everywhere, lol. The way the two Veroniques (Véronique in France, and Weronika in Poland) are connected just felt... beyond coincidence? Like, yeah, they look identical, but the empathy thing, especially that moment when Veronique feels Weronika's death – that stuff SCREAMS some kind of psychic link experiment gone unnoticed, or maybe even a parallel universe bleed-through. Am I totally off base here? There wasn't any explicit sci-fi tech or aliens or anything, but the concept is so fertile for a cool sci-fi world. I was particularly obsessed with that scene where Veronique is listening to the tape that the puppeteer guy makes of her. After Weronika's death, the tape is really haunting. I found myself thinking what if there's some kind of tech on the tape itself? Can it tap into her emotions and translate them into the puppets? It feels like advanced tech, but the movie isn't explicit about it. And can we even talk about the ending? Is she avoiding the same fate that Weronika had? I'd love to hear other people's thoughts… especially if you're also a sci-fi geek who sees potential in the weirdest places!
