The People Under the Stairs - Still Creepy After All These Years!
Okay, so I just rewatched "The People Under the Stairs" last night. I remember seeing it as a kid at a friend's house and being totally freaked out! Honestly, seeing it again now, it still holds up. It's messed up, kinda funny in a dark way, and definitely not for the faint of heart BUT...I'm wondering what everyone else thinks about showing it to older kids/teens? Like, my 14-year-old is really into horror movies, but the whole 'mommy' and 'daddy' thing is kinda...intense. I'm not squeamish, and I don't think kids need to be completely sheltered, but it's that weird blend of social commentary and straight-up disturbing imagery that gives me pause. Fool's (Brandon Adams) a great character though, rooting for him the whole time! And the siblings, known as Mommy and Daddy, are so completely unhinged. Definitely have some of the best villains in horror. I mean, the scene where Daddy's chasing Fool around with that shotgun? Whew! So, am I overthinking it? Anyone else let their older kids watch this one? What age do you think is appropriate, if at all? And what did you think of the movie yourself? Did it hold up for you, or is it just a weird nostalgia trip for me at this point? I'm curious to hear other perspectives! Also, quick side note: Is it just me, or does Ving Rhames always bring a level of cool to any role he plays? Even a small role like this one! Love him!
