Career Opportunities: A Suburban Fever Dream I Secretly Love

Okay, so... "Career Opportunities" (1991). I know, I know, it's probably not going to win any awards for groundbreaking cinema, especially compared to some of the amazing international films y'all have been talking about! But I have a soft spot for this movie. It's pure 90s cheese, like a mallrat sundae that never gets old. I mean, a disaffected rich girl, Josie (Jennifer Connelly, stunning as always), literally sleeping in a Target dressing room and then getting locked in overnight with the town loser, Jim Dodge (Frank Whaley)? It's ridiculous! But endearingly so. What gets me is the whole vibe. It's like a suburban fever dream. Everything is so brightly lit and artificial, especially that Target. And the robbers! John Candy's cameo as the janitor trying to catch them is comedy gold. I always crack up when he's trying to explain the situation to the police. And for a 'supposed' kid friendly movie you can hear the character Jim Dodge say the F word on multiple occasions. I wonder if anyone else caught onto that like I did? I feel as though the film is not for kids as it contains some profanity and sexual jokes. Josie wanting to escape her life resonated with me a lot when I was younger. (Though, thankfully, my escape plan didn't involve sleeping in a department store!) It's a very simple story but the characters were so charming and well-acted. It's a movie that doesn't take itself seriously, and there's something really refreshing about that. I'm not sure if it's held up for everyone, of course, but it's always a fun re-watch for me. It's like comfort food for the soul, popcorn included! Anyone else have a soft spot for "Career Opportunities," or am I alone on this island of 90s nostalgia? Maybe it's a guilty pleasure, but I embrace it! What other films have similar vibes? I totally want to build a re-watch list now.
