Operation Condor: Are the Tunes Too Fun?

Hey soundtrack junkies! HughesReviews here, back with another dive into the often-overlooked world of film scores. I recently rewatched "Operation Condor" (1991) – you know, Jackie Chan battling Nazis (sort of) in the desert for gold. The movie itself is pure, unadulterated fun. But the music... okay, here's my slightly crackpot theory: I think the score downplays the stakes too much. I mean, on the one hand, the music is catchy as heck. It's got that upbeat, almost goofy energy that perfectly matches Jackie's stuntwork. Remember that scene where he's fighting inside the wind tunnel? The music is bouncing along, making it feel like a comedic set piece rather than a life-or-death struggle. And yeah, it IS comedic, but... wouldn't a little more tension have elevated it? I'm not saying it needed to be a Zimmer-esque epic, but maybe dial back the 'wacky hijinks' vibe just a tad? My theory is that someone was afraid to let any real danger creep in, so they kept it super light and poppy. Perhaps they though a serious score would clash with Jackie's persona, or maybe they just wanted to ensure a light-hearted romp. I still enjoy the score, don't get me wrong. It's infectious! But I can't help but wonder what a slightly more nuanced approach would have brought to the table. Like, imagine if parts of the Nazi base infiltration had a hint of Ennio Morricone...a guy can dream, right? Anyway, what do you guys think? Am I completely off base here? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Maybe I'm just being overly critical, or maybe there's some genius I'm missing. Either way, happy listening! And remember to dig deeper than what's on the surface... sometimes the best treasures are buried in the details (pun intended!).
