Curly Sue: Am I the Only One Who Thinks This Movie is Wildly Overrated?
Alright, alright, before you all grab your pitchforks, hear me out. I just rewatched "Curly Sue" for the first time in probably 20 years, and... wow. I remember loving this movie as a kid, but now? It's creepy. The whole Bill-Curly Sue dynamic felt super off. Like, he's obviously exploiting her cuteness for his own gain, and everyone just eats it up? Maybe it's just seeing it through adult eyes, but yikes. And don't even get me started on Grey Ellison. She's supposed to be this high-powered lawyer, but she falls for Bill's obvious grift like it's nothing? And then she immediately wants to adopt Curly Sue? That's not how adoption works, folks! It's ridiculously unrealistic. I'm supposed to believe she goes from uptight career woman to potential mom in, like, a week because...? Curly Sue has cute dimples? Seriously? I know it's supposed to be a heartwarming tale of found family, but it just felt manipulative and frankly, a little unsettling. The restaurant scene is pretty funny, I'll give it that. But honestly, is this movie really the childhood classic everyone remembers, or were we all just blinded by Shirley Temple Jr.? Anyone else feel this way, or am I just a heartless cynical grinch? I can't be the only one who thinks the premise is kinda messed up, right? Like, Bill is totally grooming Curly Sue, I'm just saying.
