Dying Young - Cheesy, I know, but I gotta ask...
Okay, international film buffs, bear with me. I know "Dying Young" (1991) isn't exactly Kurosawa or Fellini, haha! But I re-watched it the other night and I have feelings. It's pure 90s melodrama, I admit it. Julia Roberts as Hilary O'Neil nursing Campbell Scott's Victor? Talk about a slow burn romance under tragic circumstances! I'm a sucker for it, even if it does feel incredibly dated. I mean, the soundtrack alone is a time capsule. But here's the thing that always gets me: the ending. No spoilers (though, let's be real, who hasn't seen this or at least knows the gist?), but do you think Hilary really made the right choice staying with Victor? I mean, obviously his health is failing very quickly, and while their connection is beautiful and it feels right in the moment… wasn't she potentially setting herself up for massive heartbreak? I get the "live in the moment" ethos, but was it realistically sustainable, especially for someone who had already been hurt in the past? Maybe it's just because I'm older now, but I find myself questioning her motivations more than I did when I was a teenager. There's something about the intensity of young love colliding with the finality of mortality that is still compelling, but I also wonder if it's ultimately, even slightly, selfish of her? Maybe I'm just being cynical! What do you guys think? Was her devotion admirable, or was she blinded by the "romance" of it all?
