Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead: Weekend at Bernie's with Teens?
Alright, GenX crew, moviebuff_marc here. Remember that summer of '91? We were all rocking flannel and trying to figure out what the heck grunge was. I recently rewatched "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead," and man, the nostalgia hit HARD. Christina Applegate is pure '90s cool, and the premise is just insane. Seriously, who wouldn't want to fake being an adult for a summer and get away with it? It's basically "Weekend at Bernie's" but with teenagers covering up a much more…permanent…babysitting problem. The whole scene where she's trying to learn how to type and talking about "handling assets" is gold. And the fashion! That blazer dress Sue Ellen wears to the office? Iconic. But, let's be real, the plot is kinda ridiculous. Like, no one questions a teenager suddenly running a fashion company's mailroom? And the romance with Keith Coogan's character is sweet, but it feels a bit shoehorned in. Still, it's pure comfort food. Compared to some of the real classics, like, say, "The Breakfast Club," it doesn't have the same depth or profound message. But it's a fun, silly movie with a great soundtrack (MC Hammer, anyone?) and a killer performance from Applegate. Is it the best movie ever? Nah. But it's a perfect rainy-day, brain-off kinda flick. Anyone else totally obsessed with this back in the day? Or am I just showing my age? P.S. - I'm still trying to figure out where those dishes go. It's been 30+ years...
