High Heels: A Campy Soap Opera That Goes Off the Rails (But in a Good Way?)

Okay, so I just finished watching 'High Heels' (thanks, Criterion Channel!). I knew basically nothing going in except that it was a Pedro Almodóvar film, and…WOW. This movie is MESSY. I mean, the plot is total telenovela: aging diva mom returns, daughter is married to one of her (the mom's) ex-lovers, murder mystery… It's a lot. Victoria Abril as Rebeca is AMAZING. She's got this tightly wound energy that just simmers the whole time. And Marisa Paredes as Becky, the mom, is just pure fabulousness in every scene. The costumes, the drama, the complete ridiculousness of it all… I was honestly glued to the screen, even when I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Like, was the shoe REALLY the murder weapon? And the lip syncing scene? Iconic! I'm not sure if I loved it, loved it - it definitely gets kinda bonkers in the back half, and the ending felt a little rushed, but I was thoroughly entertained. It's like a beautiful, melodramatic trainwreck that you can't look away from. Definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood for some high camp and killer heels (literally, maybe?). Anyone else seen this one? What did you think? Did the fashion alone make it worth it for you too?
