Dead Again: Reincarnation, Hypnosis, and Killer Scissors!

Okay, so I just re-watched "Dead Again" (1991) and I have to say, it's still a wild ride! I remembered bits and pieces from when I saw it ages ago, but watching it knowing the twists and turns definitely adds another layer. For those who haven't seen it, it's got Kenneth Branagh (who also directed!) as both a 40s composer accused of murder AND a 90s private eye, which is already a lot. Emma Thompson's chilling as his wife, and then also shows up as the amnesiac in the present. Talk about commitment! The way they weave the parallel storylines together, jumping between the black and white 40s and the color 90s, is super effective. It's a bit over the top, sure, but it's SO entertaining. Honestly, the hypnosis stuff is a little cheesy, and the whole reincarnation angle is a bit out there, but the performances are what really sell it. Andy Garcia is great as the psychiatrist, and Derek Jacobi is just perfection - he steals every scene he's in! I think my favourite scene has to be when Grace (Emma Thompson) is under hypnosis and starts reliving the past, her dialogue slowly shifting from confused and childlike to this clipped, sophisticated 40s voice... it's amazing. Speaking of Grace, I felt so badly for her character! Amnesia storylines can be a bit lazy sometimes, but I thought this one was really well done. I think what makes this movie stick with me is the sense of mystery and suspense they build. You're constantly trying to figure out who's telling the truth and who's manipulating whom. The reveal is kind of bonkers and involves SPOILER ALERT ridiculously oversized scissors! END OF SPOILER It's definitely not a perfectly polished film, and maybe it crosses into "campy" territory for some, especially with the score, but I adore the ambition and the sheer audacity of it. It's a fun thriller with a seriously dark heart. Has anyone else seen this one? What did you think of the dual roles for Branagh and Thompson? Did the twist at the end work for you, or was it too much? I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on this unique little film - I think it's stood the test of time pretty well, even if the fashion sure hasn't!
