Hearts of Darkness: Holy Crap, That Shoot Was Insane!
Okay, so I just finished watching Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. Whoa. I knew Apocalypse Now was a troubled production, but I had NO idea it was THAT messed up. Like, legitimately, how did Coppola not have a full-blown mental breakdown on set? I'm getting stressed just watching the documentary! The weather alone! And Brando showing up completely unprepared? Dude was getting paid a fortune! Especially wild was the Martin Sheen stuff. The dude actually had a heart attack, and they filmed some of it? That's…intense. And the way they talked about needing to change the ending constantly because Brando was basically improvising nonsense? I mean, the ending of Apocalypse Now IS kinda weird, but knowing the backstory makes it almost understandable, in a messed-up way. I kinda loved that weird Kurtz compound scene now that I know how much they were winging it. But man, the behind the scenes stuff is bonkers. What I really want to know is, what was the actual budget of Apocalypse Now by the end? I heard whispers it was way over what they expected. Also, anyone else feel like the documentary itself added to the lore of the oginal movie? It's like, you can't watch Apocalypse Now now without thinking about the craziness that went into it. I mean imagine being married to Coppola at that time! Poor Eleanor! Anyways, thoughts? Did Hearts of Darkness change your perception of Apocalypse Now? Did it make you appreciate it more, or less? Also, someone tell me what happend to all that weed Hopper was smoking. Sheesh.
