Drop Dead Fred: A Blast From The Past (and Maybe a Little TOO Edgy?)
Alright, fellow Gen X'ers, let's talk about "Drop Dead Fred" (1991). I rewatched this the other night, and man, the nostalgia hit HARD. Remember when Phoebe Cates was the girl? And Rik Mayall...gone way too soon. Anyway, the movie. So, it's basically about Lizzie (Cates) who's just down on her luck, right? Then her imaginary childhood friend, Drop Dead Fred, pops back into her life to, uh, 'help'. And, look, some of the gags still land. Fred messing with her awful mother (Marsha Mason KILLING IT as usual) are pretty funny. I especially liked the scene where he superglues her to the toilet seat -- pure comedic gold. But...watching it now, there's some stuff that's definitely aged poorly. Fred's a bit too destructive and like...kinda mean spirited at times, y'know? Like, I remember laughing hysterically when he ate the neighbor's goldfish when I was a kid...now I just think "Wow, that's messed up!" It's definitely not high art, and it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea. If you're looking for something deep and meaningful...go rewatch 'The Breakfast Club' or something. But if you're feeling nostalgic and want a bit of anarchic 90s humor, "Drop Dead Fred" might scratch that itch. Maybe watch it with a grain of salt and remember it's from a different era. Anyone else feel the same way?
