Okay, "Slacker" is Weird But...Kinda Relatable?
So, I finally watched "Slacker" (1991). Genre? Existential angst marinated in Austin weirdness, LOL. I went in expecting quirky and got...a whole lot of walking and talking and, honestly, a little bit of head-scratching. No idea who directed it, which honestly, feels appropriate for the movie's vibe. I'm not gonna lie, I got a little lost at times following the different characters and their random philosophies. The scene with the "Possible Hitler" conspiracy theorist? Bizarre. The woman trying to sell Madonna's pap smear? Double bizarre. But then, I'd stumble across a gem of a conversation, like the one about the meaning of art or the struggles of being an artist (aren't we all, deep down?). It made me think, even if I didn't totally get it. It's definitely not a rom-com, obvi, but there's something romantic, I guess, about the freedom these characters have to just be. No pressure to conform, no real ambition...just hanging out and pondering life's big (and small) questions. Maybe my bar for romance is just low after watching so many cheesy Hallmark movies, hahaha. Overall, "Slacker" isn't something I'd rewatch every week. But it's a fascinating snapshot of a specific time and place, and it definitely made me think about the different ways people choose to live their lives. If you're looking for something different and don't mind a little bit of chaos, give it a shot. Just don't expect a tidy plot or a happy ending, unless you consider existential pondering a happy ending, which...maybe it is?
