"Batman Returns" - Still Holds Up (Especially the Sound!)
Okay, so I just rewatched "Batman Returns" and man, I forgot how DARK that movie is. Like, not just thematically, but the actual cinematography is gorgeous, all those shadows, you know? Definitely a Burton vibe dialed up to 11. But what really struck me this time around was the sound design. Remember Penguin's lair? All that echoing water, the clanking metal, the screeching of the penguins themselves...it was incredibly immersive, even now. The foley artists really killed it. Makes you wonder how much of that was practical versus added in post - I'm betting it's a mix of both. And let's talk about Danny Elfman's score. Obviously iconic, but the way it underscores (pun intended!) the scene where Selina Kyle transforms into Catwoman is just...chef's kiss. The shift from the softer, more melancholic theme to the aggressive, almost predatory music is perfect. Plus, the visual effects for Catwoman's transformation, especially when she's stitching up her costume? Still impressive, even if it's dated. The Penguin kinda creeped me out as a kid, and honestly, he still does! A few things haven't aged perfectly - some of the CGI elements (like the bat missile computer graphics) are pretty cringe-worthy now, but overall, the practical effects and the performances hold up really well. Anyone else think that "Batman Returns" actually might be better than the first one? I'm not saying it IS, but it's definitely a contender, and in terms of just sheer visual style and committed performances, it's got a strong case. What are your thoughts?
