Alien 3...Woah. That Was Dark AF

Okay, so I finally watched Alien 3. I know, I know, I'm late to the party. But, wow, talk about a change of pace from Aliens! I was expecting more of the same kick-ass Ripley blasting aliens with a pulse rifle... and instead, bam, everyone's dead off the bat. Seriously, Newt and Hicks?! I actually yelled at the screen. That was BRUTAL. I get they wanted to raise the stakes, but damn. Fiorina 161 was such a creepy setting too. The whole prison planet vibe worked really well, super claustrophobic and grimy. And that alien design? Definitely different, more dog-like. The scene in the medical facility where they're trying to figure out what happened to Ripley and it's just staring at them from the vents was terrifying. I also REALLY liked Charles Dance as Clemens, the doctor. He was genuinely kind and felt like the first person Ripley could truly connect with after Hicks, so of course he gets got. Brutal Part 2. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, to be honest. Ripley just...jumps into the furnace? I mean, it's a powerful ending, but also kinda depressing. I think I need to process it a bit more. And maybe watch a comedy or something, just to cleanse my palate because this movie was bleak with a capitol B. Overall, Alien 3 was a shock. It's a very different movie from the first two, and I respect it for taking risks, even if some of those risks were... yeah, brutal. What did you guys think? Was I the only one who was completely unprepared for the opening sequence?
