Basic Instinct: Is it just me, or is this Hitchcock for the MTV generation?

Okay, so just watched Basic Instinct again (yeah, I know, guilty pleasure alert). Still holds up, right? Sharon Stone is…well, Sharon Stone. But seriously, the whole thing screams Hitchcock to me, just with way more skin and a synthesizer score that'd make Jan Hammer blush. I mean, you've got the innocent-ish guy (Douglas) drawn into a web of deceit and suspicion by a beautiful, dangerous woman (Stone). The whole 'wrong man' trope is classic Hitch. Anyone else get that vibe? And speaking of Sharon Stone, that interrogation scene? Iconic. But I can't help but think it's a bit…obvious, maybe? Like, Hitchcock was always so much more subtle with his suspense. Here, it's like they're hitting you over the head with the femme fatale thing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed being hit over the head, lol, but still... What do you all think? Am I reaching, or is there a genuine connection to Hitchcockian thrillers here? And while we're at it, anyone else think they kinda copped out with the ending? The ice pick under the bed...a little too on the nose, right? I was hoping for something a tad bit more ambiguous, like Vertigo or The Birds. Also, side note: anyone know who directed this flick? I can't seem to find it - maybe my VHS copy is missing the credits. Anyway, hit me with your thoughts...and try not to spoil it too much for the youngsters who might still be discovering this one!
