Basic Instinct: Overhyped or Actually Good? (My Hot Take)

Alright, alright, let's talk about Basic Instinct. Everyone seems to worship this flick as some groundbreaking erotic thriller. Frankly, I think it's… fine. Sharon Stone is undeniably magnetic. The interrogation scene? Iconic. But groundbreaking? Come on. It's basically a dressed-up whodunnit with more nudity and less actual mystery than, say, Columbo. The plot is full of holes you could drive a truck through and the 'twists' are about as surprising as finding ice in your freezer. Seriously. And Michael Douglas? I always liked him - but he looks so old! And his Nick Curran character is just a tired cliche of the 'troubled cop on the edge.' He's supposed to be this flawed, addicted guy, but it just comes across as lazy writing. Honestly, I was rooting for Catherine. At least she owned her psycho-ness. Remember the ice pick killings? I find myself in the minority when I say that the movie is somewhat predictable and the outcome of the main murder is quite apparent from almost the very beginning of the movie. Sure, the cinematography is sleek, and the soundtrack is appropriately suspenseful, but those technical aspects don't elevate a fundamentally flawed story. Let's be honest here, people. It's mainly remembered for that scene, and frankly, there's better erotic cinema out there that doesn't rely on flimsy plot devices. Not to mention, did anyone else think that the lesbian subplot was pretty shoehorned in? Also, where did those killer puppies come from?? I can't be the only one left wondering So, yeah, Basic Instinct. It's okay. Watch it for Sharon Stone, maybe. But don't go into it expecting some cinematic revolution. You'll be disappointed. I'll be interested to hear if anybody thinks I'm completely wrong here. Let me know!
