Okay, so...is Porco Rosso secretly a horror movie??
Alright horror hounds, bear with me here. I know, I KNOW, Porco Rosso isn't officially horror. It's Miyazaki! It's Studio Ghibli! But hear me out. I just re-watched it, and the older I get, the more unsettling it becomes. Think about it: a world war veteran cursed into a pig-man hybrid, haunted by the ghosts of his fallen comrades. That opening scene where he's diving into the clouds?! Chills! The whole vibe is melancholic and tinged with this deep sense of trauma. And that dream sequence flying alongside the armada of dead pilots? Straight outta a gothic ghost story. Even the sky pirates, while kinda goofy, are genuinely threatening and inject some real tension into the lighter moments. I'm not saying it's jump-scare material, but the atmosphere is definitely bordering on eerie and psychological horror adjacent. Maybe it's just me reading too much into it because I'm always looking for the dark side of things, haha. But I swear, the older I get the more I see a hidden layer of darkness in Miyazaki's work, especially with something like Porco. Anyone else feel this way, or am I just losing it? What's your take - cute aviator pig or tragic, cursed soul? I def lean towards the latter. And seriously, that dream sequence... gives me the creeps every time.
