Hail to the King, Baby! Does Army of Darkness Still Hold Up?
Okay, international cinema is MY jam, right? But sometimes, you just gotta revisit a cult classic. I recently re-watched "Army of Darkness" (1992) and honestly, it's even more bonkers than I remembered! I honestly don't know who directed it, but they sure had fun and I applaud them. Ash, our suave department store clerk turned medieval hero (or anti-hero, let's be real!), is just iconic. Bruce Campbell is chef's kiss. The whole premise is so absurd, I almost died laughing when he has to recite the magic words ('Klaatu Verata N...necktie...neckturn....nickel!'). Who comes up with this stuff?!? Seriously, the practical effects are amazing for the time. The Deadites are gloriously cheesy, and the fight scenes are so over-the-top. I think my favourite part is when Ash builds his own prosthetic hand out of metal – so resourceful! And his one-liners? Legendary. 'Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.' Pure quotable gold. Also, that love story with Sheila? Surprisingly sweet! Even if she does turn into a Deadite for, like, five minutes. Still, I wouldn't call it a romance for the ages you know? It's easy to see why "Army of Darkness" has such a dedicated following. It doesn't take itself seriously for a second, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. It's a total blast from the past and a perfect example of silly, creative filmmaking. Has anyone else revisited this lately? What were your thoughts? I'm curious if it holds up for other international film lovers? I will say, the ending always feels a little abrupt. I kinda wish they fleshed that out a bit more. Oh well, doesn't stop me from enjoying it! I'll even go as far as to say that it is a must see for horror fans, given its horror/comedy approach, and also for fans of Bruce Campbell because he is simply the greatest.
