Sister Act: Actually Kind of Problematic? Hear Me Out...

Okay, I'm gonna say it. 'Sister Act' is...fine. It's not some cinematic treasure people seem to think it is. Yes, Whoopi Goldberg is great, but let's be real, the entire plot relies on the nuns being portrayed as completely incompetent and musically tone-deaf until Deloris Van Cartier shows up. It's lazy writing that essentially paints these women, who have devoted their lives to God, as pathetic stereotypes. Like, are we supposed to believe that not ONE of them had even a smidgen of rhythm before she showed up? Please. And the whole 'saving the church' narrative? Come on. They needed a showy choir and some new paint to be relevant? What about actual faith? What about serving the community in a way that isn't just putting on a performance? It feels incredibly superficial. The bit with the donations being dropped in the plate seems unrealistic, plus the cops clearly need to get better at witness protection. So the cops just so happened to send Deloris to that specific church? Very convienent. Don't even get me started on Mother Superior (Maggie Smith). Yes, she's supposed to be uptight, but the level of suspicion and disdain she has for Deloris feels... excessive? It's like she's actively hoping Deloris will fail, and then acts surprised when people start attending mass. Seriously? The plot just feels like a vehicle for some catchy songs and Whoopi's charisma, but it lacks any real depth. Look, I get it. It's feel-good fluff. But I'm so tired of Hollywood using religion as a punchline or a last resort solution for problems. I'm just saying, maybe we should all pump the brakes on calling this a classic? It's a cute movie, nothing more.
