Sister Act: "Get Out! Get Out!"

Alright, alright, settle down people! I've been revisiting classics lately and had to throw on Sister Act (1992). I mean, who DOESN'T love this movie? It's just pure, unadulterated joy. Whoopi Goldberg is peak Whoopi, and the whole "fish out of water" thing with Deloris Van Cartier hiding out in the convent is comedy gold. Remember when she first gets there and Mother Superior (Maggie Smith, perfection as always) is giving her the side-eye the entire time? The tension is palpable, you just know something's gotta give. And, of course, the music? Forget about it! The transformation of the choir from truly awful to legitimately good is just chef's kiss. Sister Mary Robert's (Wendy Makkena) journey is probably my favorite, honestly. Talk about finding your voice (literally and figuratively!). Every single performance is iconic. The bit where they're singing "I Will Follow Him" to the cops is hilarious. I still get chills when they hit those high notes. There's a couple of things that bug me a bit though. The mob plot is fine, but it's not really the draw. I feel like they could have leaned more into the convent dynamics and less into the Vince LaRocca storyline. Like, Ed Sullivan is there? It doesn't really do anything for me, but I also understand that it was the 90s. All in all, Sister Act is like comfort food for the soul. It always puts a smile on my face and makes me wanna sing along (even if my neighbors probably hate it). And let's be honest, who hasn't wanted to shout "Get out! Get out!" at someone at some point? If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? Go on, git!!
