Zemeckis' "Death Becomes Her" - Underrated or Overhyped?

Okay, so I'm on a Zemeckis kick (Back to the Future is obviously untouchable, but Contact still gets me!), and I just rewatched "Death Becomes Her." I know it's not usually what people think of when they think Zemeckis, but man, the visual effects STILL hold up. Seriously, Goldie Hawn with the hole in her stomach?! Iconic. But here's my question... how do we feel about it as a WHOLE film? I mean, the performances are hilarious. Meryl Streep is obviously phenomenal, and Bruce Willis is SO good as the put-upon Ernest. I think he's actually the MVP here. But does the dark comedy land, or is it just... mean? I’m leaning towards the comedy landing, especially the scene where they're trying to cover up the damage with makeup and clothes. It's so absurd! I was thinking about the ending, too. It feels kinda abrupt, doesn't it? After all that build-up, they're just stuck painting themselves forever? It feels a bit nihilistic, even for a dark comedy. I think it's a clever way to show the vanity of the characters, but it leaves me a little cold. So, thoughts? Is "Death Becomes Her" a darkly comedic gem that deserves more love, or is it just a visually impressive but ultimately shallow piece of work? What do you guys think of the ending specifically? Am I missing something there?
